Oswaldo Guayasamin

As you view the art of Guayasamin you will see many different colors used for the skin color. His goal was to represent many different races of people, as many people in the world are a blending of different races. The eyes are often painted black to signify his desire that people would stop looking at the color of peoples skin to define them as a person. Some of his painting show anguish over centuries of suffering. Some show the nurturing love between people. Guayasamin also loved his home of quito and painted some scenes of the beautiful landscape of the city.
Please go the following website to view his art. http://www.guayasamin.com/pages/index.html
Go to galeria de obra and view the following sections:
Los Manos (should be the first thing you see)
Ternura
Paisajes y Flores
Retrato
Define each title (what is "Los Manos") and write your impressions (at least 1 sentence) per section.
For 5 bonus points...
Why do you think that Guayasamin painted such large hands?
*The pictures are from my visit to the museum. The are of one of his statues, two of my favorite paintings (see the one with the condor and the bull-this was the Yawar Fiesta we discussed), and the view of Quito from his home.

Los Manos-showed anguish, probably of the Indegenous people, through a pair of hands as the focus and the people's faces as the backdrop.

Ternura-showed love, probably between an Incan mother and child.

Paisajes y Flores-mostly flowers and houses, but there are also some abstract figures.

Retrato-pictures of the famous Indigenous people such as Atahualpa.

*He probably painted such large hands because he wanted to show all that the indigenous people had to lose and all of the work they had to do with their hands.

Los Manos-These paintings all had people with huge hands covering their face. He may of did this to show how important their hands were to them.

Ternura-These showed the love of a mother for her child. And how defense a motherwasfor her child.

Paisajes y Flores- Shows how beautiful the flowers were around him. And other things like houses and some abstract things.

Retrato-Indigenous people of were fmous in their time, such as a man named Yupanqui.

>I think he paited the hands of the Indigenous people so large toshow how important their hands were to them. The may of used their hands to make food, create homes, and other things the needed. This could be assumed because their hands were huge and rough, working hands.-Tiffany Middleton

Los Manos means the hands. I think these paintings are interesting because he is trying to get a message out through his paintings.

Ternura means Tenderness. I like these pictures best because it shows that his people could love too.

Paisajes y Flores means Sceneries and Flowers. These pictures are very pretty and colorful!

Retrato means Portrait. These pictures are neat because it shows us what the people looked like.

* I believe he painted such large hands because he wanted them to stand out. I believe he wanted them to stand out because they were their only means of surviving.

Excelente comentarios. El arte puede decir mucho. Puede hablar para la gente que en los libros de historia, a veces, no tenia voz.

Los Manos showed sadness or a fear for themselves.By having the big hands take over the painting it showed they were trying to shield themselves.

Tenura shows a mother comforting her child or trying to be the protector.

Paisajes y Flores is set in a colorful backdrop showing flowers from the incan land.

Retrato could be showing some of the influences for the incan culture, like past kings or rulers or just people that helped.

*I think he painted the large hands to show that no matter what life brought for them, they could always use their hands to make weapons and to defend themselves and better themselves during hard times.

Los Manos(The hands)- I think Oswaldo Guayasamin used Los Manos to emphasize people emotions.
Tenura(Tenderness)- It portrays the woman and child's closeness. They look peaceful and relaxed.
Paisajes y Flores(Landscapes and Flowers)- The pictures show beautiful landscape and flowers. You could tell that the painter liked his homeland.
Retrato(Portrait)- This one seems to show shrewd hardworking people.

I think he used large hands so that he could emphasize the lines on them, and how worn they were. The large hands made these things much more noticable.

Los Manos~ A pain in a person's life and shows that their are something even their hands can't help them save themselves...

Ternura~ Love between family...

Paisajes y Flores~ Abstract in the sense showing flowers...

Retrato~ The people of the land...

~He painted large pictures most likely to give a better impression of the surrounding world, that he wants to see noticed. It is a sense of "I want you to see the gray, not juts the black and white." It shows that there are other stories that need to be told and most likely, loudly..~

Los Manos- They all had huge hands...they most of been important..

*I think the hands were so imprtant to them because everyone uses their hands for alot of things...that's why they were so huge in the painting..
